GUIDE, 2013 - 2015

The National Association of Cultural Councils in Denmark was the applicant and Interfolk was the coordinator of the Grundtvig multilateral project: "Culture Guides for marginalised social group" (GUIDE), Oct 2013 to January 2016 (28 months).

Partnership circle

Background and need

Modern welfare states have as an important objective to ensure free and equal access to art and culture for all, because the experience of art and culture can enliven and enlighten people and change their lives for the better. Art and culture have positive consequences for both the individual and for society.

Despite the official culture policy, our societies have a recurring problem with large residual groups of non-users of the cultural services,  especially among social marginalised, while the main users are the well-educated and economically well-off populations in major cities - which has been documented latest by the Danish Ministry of Culture, "The cultural habits of Danes, 2012"

The partnership circle agreed that the cultural civil society associations could make a difference by engaging cultural volunteers as Guides, using the idea of 'people helping people'.

Aim

The aim is to develop the abilities of associations in the area of amateur art and voluntary culture to offer new culture guide activities for marginalised social groups, especially with focus on learning for senior citizens, intergenerational learning and migrants’ participation.

The key word for this aim was “cultural sustainability” meaning that active citizenship, social inclusion and cultural cohesion will be promoted by “citizens help citizens” – by volunteers helping marginalised social groups to gain access to art and culture as an important part of “the good life”.

These culture activities may include visits to professional offerings such as movies and theatres, museum visits, concerts, art exhibitions; or as participants in amateur art such as late starters in music or in voluntary culture such as old handicraft, local history or life stories and other culture heritage issues, or as active in voluntary music, theatre and art associations that organise professional offerings in the local community.

Outcome

Overall, the partnership and their network improved their knowhow, methods and practises on how to implement new culture guide services for social marginalised groups in our local communities.

More specific, the project promoted:

  • The organisational capacity of the engaged voluntary arts and culture associations to facilitate the culture guide services.
  • New innovative curricula and training course modules for culture guide volunteers.
  • New methods as presented in the Handbook abot methodologies and Best Practise of culture guide services.
